The result of the fandom getting their hands on it is the FreeSpace 2 Source Code Project (known by the fandom as the SCP. However, in 2002, Volition released the source code for the game. The franchise ended there despite the incomplete story of the second game, due to a split between the publisher and the developer.

FreeSpace 2 received high praise, including numerous "Game of the Year" awards. Silent Threat was generally agreed to be of very poor quality in comparision, which led to the fans reworking it as Silent Threat Reborn. The battle is on to find a way to contain them before they overrun known space once more.įreeSpace received mixed reviews, with reviewers praising the graphics - particularly the explosions - but calling the story and gameplay unoriginal. Then the Shivans return in force, effortlessly sweeping aside all opposition. The Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance is embroiled in a civil war with Admiral Aken Bosch and his xenophobic, Vasudan-hating Neo-Terran Front. The story focused on the Galactic Terran Intelligence organization attempting a military coup in the aftermath of the Great War, centered around a new superweapon: the GTD Hades.įreeSpace 2 takes place 32 years later. Freespace 2, if anything, has even fewer cutscenes than the first game, and way fewer primitive human models trying to emote to the best of their late-90s abilities. I assume a lot of that is making do with much smaller budgets, rather than an intentional artistic choice, but it worked. It was also refreshing to see Volition turn away from the big-budget, pseudo-Hollywood FMV approach Chris Roberts was chasing at the time. The endings of both Freespace 1 and Freespace 2 are fantastic, and in general the franchise had a more fatalistic tone than nearly anything in Wing Commander (maaaaybe 4 gets as dark). At least the long-forgotten Descent to Undermountain was built on a modified Descent engine.

Freespace and Descent had nothing in common besides a dev team, and even then Parallax Software had already split into Volition (who handled Freespace) and Outrage (who did Descent 3 and collapsed after one or two more games). This was one of those dumb Interplay marketing decisions that I think may have hurt the franchise in the long run.
